I grew up hiking, camping & hunting with a strong appreciation for the outdoors…and with that, how quickly things can take a turn for the worse. Several once jolly hikes have severely changed mood when I went to sooth my parched throat with some cool water, only to find out my water bottle is empty…and still have several hours to go. Or opt for a quick shortcut, only to get disoriented and wonder if I would be sleeping under the stars with the bears that night.
Flash forward to present; now I have the privilege of guiding my wife and three kids (and friends) on epic outdoor adventures. Wow – the stakes just got higher. Its not just me I have to worry about, it’s the whole family. After many years of family adventures and Wilderness First Aid classes, I’ve put together a gear bag that I take everywhere. When I have this in my pack, I can rest easy knowing we are prepared for whatever shenanigans we get in to. I’ve divided this gear list into the three essential categories: food, water, shelter & first aid.
